Phonics
- At Cherbourg Primary School, we teach Phonics using Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised. This is a complete Systematic Synthetic Phonics (SSP) programme developed by schools for schools. It is based on the original Letters and Sounds programme but has been extensively revised to provide a comprehensive teaching programme that meets the expectations of the National Curriculum.
- At Cherbourg, Phonics is taught daily in Reception and Year 1. In Year 2, children continue to consolidate their phonics knowledge alongside the teaching of spelling, grammar and punctuation.
- Big Cat Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised books are the reading books used at Cherbourg Primary School.
- Visit the Little Wandle 'For Parents' page here.
- The resources on this page will help you support your child with pronouncing phonemes (sounds) and recognising and writing graphemes (letters). There are also useful videos demonstrating how phonics is taught at school, enabling you to confidently support your child's reading at home.
