Curriculum Intent
Cherbourg Primary is a large community school where our children are central to everything that we do. We are a very inclusive school and we believe that all children have equal rights to a broad and balanced curriculum which enables them to achieve their full-potential. Our school motto ‘We’re here to learn’ drives our aim to develop children who are ready and motivated to learn, try their best and who are caring and respectful to all others. We provide a broad and balanced curriculum with a clear focus on subjects as discrete disciplines to deliver the curriculum.
We know that our children require an educational balance between knowledge and skills based learning and our curriculum reflects this. It is progressively sequenced to embed learning and enthuse our children by building year on year on their individual experiences and backgrounds while also revisiting key knowledge. Our curriculum has recently been revised to ensure that pupils build knowledge sequentially in subjects from the early years to year 6 and we are in the early implementation of embedding our vision within our curriculum model. Our new school values: kindness, respect, resilience, honesty and inclusiveness are also being implemented and will be developed so they are embedded throughout our curriculum.
We aim to provide meaningful contexts and some links across subjects where relevant and where these subjects support learning in other subject disciplines. Where it is not possible to make links, it has not been forced, with the priority being the coherent sequence and acquisition of skills and knowledge in each subject, rather than tenuously linked learning under a topic umbrella.
We recognise that the main contextual challenges of our school are:
- Oracy and language skills
- Children entering our school below age related expectations
- Limited wider world experiences
Our curriculum intent is to excite, challenge and engage children of all abilities, backgrounds and starting points using the unique features of Eastleigh and the surrounding area. We want our children to be fully prepared for their next step in their learning journey and beyond.
To ensure the most disadvantaged pupils in our school have the best opportunity to thrive academically, our Pupil Premium Strategy focuses on reading, vocabulary acquisition and speaking and listening so that all pupils can access the curriculum. Similarly, we closely map out our provision for our SEN pupils, so that they gain the knowledge and skills they need to succeed in life.
