Maths
Maths is an essential skill for everyday life that links to all other areas of the curriculum and especially Science, Computing and Design and Technology. Our aim is to teach the children how to improve their fluency and accuracy in counting and calculation, reason mathematically by following lines of enquiry, developing arguments and using mathematical vocabulary to justify their ideas as well as applying their knowledge to solve problems.
At Cherbourg we follow the White Rose sequence of learning and adapt this where necessary to meet the needs of our children. Children need to learn good mental calculation skills and recall of number facts (e.g. times tables), as well as solving word problems and learning to calculate on paper.
A great deal of Maths is practical work especially in the first years of school. As your child progresses through the school more emphasis will be placed on recording work on paper. There is a strong emphasis on developing calculation strategies for addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. This is often taught through problem solving with measures, data handling and shape.
