We’re here to learn!

Music

We are really proud of our ambitious music provision. Children will learn at least five instruments during their time in school and we begin with all our Year 1s learning the recorder, once a week for the whole year. We work closely with Hampshire Music Service and they provide a teacher for a whole day every week who works with the children across both Key Stages, teaching them recorders, ukuleles and a selection of woodwind instruments. This is done in whole class, group and individual lessons. We also provide an hour of brass lessons each week. We currently provide this for free during school time, but children who are successful do need to show enthusiasm and commitment by practising regularly.

Music is taught throughout the school and is well resourced with a range of tuned and untuned instruments available for class use. Singing is taught at both Key Stages. Music is a great subject for extending pupils understanding of other cultures. At present pupils have the opportunity to play recorders in Year 1 and Year 3, ukulele in Year 2 and a variety of instruments through the Year 4 Music Project. Hampshire Music Service provides peripatetic music tuition during the week for those children who would like to commit to extra-curricular learning. Pupils participate in local music events and liaison with other schools and colleges is being developed. The school arranges for professional musicians to perform to pupils from time to time in order to enrich their experiences.
