3 Dauntless

Welcome to Dauntless Class

Read more about how we became Dauntless class

We chose to be Dauntless class because of its close ties to Science, Technology and Engineering. HMS Dauntless’ association with the Women’s Royal Naval Service (WRNS) also shows how women can excel in their chosen profession.

HMS Dauntless was the second of the Type 45 destroyers to join the Fleet in November 2010, shortly after being the first of the ‘Daring Class’ destroyers to fire the new Sea Viper missile. One of the most cutting edge and technologically advanced weapon systems in the British Navy. The start of 2015 saw HMS Dauntless deployed to the gulf where she spent the bulk of her time supporting US carrier operations. In her breaks between providing air defense for US aircraft carries, HMS Dauntless visited Kuwait (hosting a reception for Prince Charles), Dubai (mid-deployment break), plus Abu Dhabi and Bahrain (hub of Royal Navy operations in the Middle East).
On the 15th May 2015, she returned to her home port of Portsmouth.

The 5th Dauntless was a shore establishment near Reading; the Women’s Royal Navy Service (WRNS) training center from 1953 to 1981. The Association of Wrens had a range of roles in the Royal Navy such as cooks, clerks, radar plotters, weapons analysts, range assessors, electricians and air mechanics. Many of these jobs have a strong Science focus. The WRNS have formed a strong bond with the new Dauntless, it has adopted the Association of Wrens as one of its Affiliates. The Association has received many invites to go onboard when the ship visits ports around the country and to other exciting and very special events such as a day at sea and a ‘mess’ dinner. The Association very much values this relationship and holds the ship’s company close to its heart. .
The Association of Wrens was formed in 1920 yet is still relevant today. Over 5,500 women members from both the UK and overseas share a unique camaraderie based on their determination that the spirit of the service is kept alive.
