2 Beagle

Welcome to Beagle Class

Read more about how we became Beagle class

On 27th December 1831 the HMS Beagle set off on its second voyage with Charles Darwin on board. The Beagle was a survey ship and its mission was to chart the coastline of the countries and islands in the southern hemisphere. Its Captain Fitzroy also realised such a journey would be an ideal opportunity to collect specimens for natural history and so Charles Darwin was invited to join the expedition.

When Mrs Greer asked us to investigate a ship that we would like to be named after we discussed at length different ships we knew about and researched others. As a class we agreed we liked the style of the Black Pearl in the Pirates of the Caribbean films and so we researched ships that were of a similar age and style. The Beagle was one such ship.

As part of our class work we were also considering the answers to some big questions we had posed such as:

Why are we here? How were we made? How was the Earth created?

As part of our research into these questions we looked at myths, creation stories and scientific theories. The discoveries Charles Darwin made on the Beagle expedition provide some answers to the questions we had posed and so we felt the Beagle could be the ideal name for us.

Alongside this we were also finding out about the world map, the countries of the world and their many different geographical features. As the Beagle was a survey ship it was in fact gathering data to create some of the early maps of the coastlines of many countries we would be looking at. Again it seemed to be the ship for us.

The Beagle was also famous for carrying many of the new technologies of that period to help with the survey. We pride ourselves in using new technologies at school to help us in our learning and broaden our understanding of the world in which we live.

Luckily Mrs Greer agreed with us and so welcome to Beagle class!
